Urgent NY State action – block S2627

The New York State Senate just passed S2627, which “Creates the crime of falsely accusing someone of a crime.” If you accuse someone of rape and then it’s decided you didn’t have enough evidence to successfully prosecute, you can be sued for a false accusation and put in jail. The example cited in the bill’s justification is the Duke rape case, with the implication that the accuser should be imprisoned. The text of the bill itself is available here: https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2017/S2627

It hasn’t passed the NY state assembly, so please call them and tell them to block this bill. The NY state senate passed it almost unanimously, so you may also wish to call your NY state senator too to demand an explanation.
